Hello everyone. How was your Christmas, Li? Did you receive lots of nice presents?

닐 : 모두 안녕하세요. 리, 크리스마스는 어땠어요? 좋은 선물을 많아 받았습니까?

Li

Yes, loads. Nothing that was really expensive. Everything was cheap and cheerful.

리 : 네, 가득이요. 정말 비싼건 없어요. 모두 싸고 좋은거예요.

Neil

Oh, that's a nice phrase you used. When people say that something is cheap and cheerful, they mean the product doesn't cost much but it serves its purpose. The customer is happy with it!

닐 : 오, 좋은 구문을 사용하셨네요. 사람들이 무언가 싸고 좋다고 말할때, 그 말은 즉슨 상품이 비싸진 않지만 사용 목적에 맞는다는 의미입니다. 받은 사람은 행복하구요!

Oh dear! If the quality is bad, I would use another phrase: 'cheap and nasty'! Let's hear a couple of examples:

To be honest I don't like online shopping because you can easily be fooled by their wonderful-looking pictures.

I know. When people want to save some money by buying something cheap and cheerful they often end up wasting their money because the goods can turn out to be cheap and nasty.

리 : 그렇죠. 사람들이 사람들이 싸고 좋은걸 사서 돈을 아껴보려고 할때 종종 물건이 싸고 형편없는 걸로 판명나서 돈을 버리는 경우가 있죠.

No one likes a product that is cheap and nasty, but I hope everyone likes the two phrases we have taught today.
