태어난 순서와 형제간의 경쟁

Nancy: Isn’t this a great time of year? Families get together over the holidays. 

낸시 : 올해의 최고의 시기 아닌가요? 휴일에 가족들이 함께하네요.

Yasmani: Maybe it’s nice for some families, but I dread my family get-togethers. 

야스마니 : 몇몇 가족에게는 좋겠지만, 저는 제 가족들이 함께하는게 두렵네요.

* dread : 몹시 무서워하다, 두려워하다

Nancy: How come? 

낸시 : 어째서요?

Yasmani: I have a big family and there has always been a lot of sibling rivalry. 

야스마니 : 저는 대가족인데 항상 형제간의 경쟁이 있었죠.

* sibling : 형제 자매

* rivalry : 경쟁

Nancy: I’m sure that was true when you were growing up, but you’ve all grown out of it, haven’t you? 

낸시 : 자랄 때는 그랬을 것 같지만, 모두 이제 다 자랐잖아요?

Yasmani: Not us. The firstborn still thinks he’s in charge, the middle children still act up to get attention, and the baby of the family is still rebellious. 

야스마니 : 우린 아니예요. 첫째는 여전히 자신이 대장이라고 생각하고, 둘째는 아직도 관심을 얻으려고 버릇없이 굴어요, 막내는 반항적이구요.

* firstborn : 첫째

* in charge : to be in position of control. ~을 맡은, 담당인

* act up : 말을 안 듣다, 버릇없이 굴다

* rebellious : 반항적인

Nancy: That’s true in a lot of families. 

낸시 : 많은 가족들도 그렇죠.

Yasmani: Yes, but when we get together, we compete to show up the others. We brag, argue, and nitpick. It’s rather pathetic, actually. 

야스마니 : 그렇죠, 하지만 우리가 다 모였을때, 자랑하기 위해 경쟁해요. 자랑하고, 다투고, 트집을 잡죠. 실제로는 더 애처로워요.

* show up : 눈에 띄다, 나타내다

* brag : 자랑하다

* nitpick : 하찮은 일에 끙끙 앓다, 별것 아닌 트집을 잡다

* pathetic : 불쌍한, 애처로운

Nancy: How do your parents handle all that? 

낸시 : 당신 부모님들은 이 모든 것을 어떻게 다루는 거죠?

Yasmani: They’ve always left us to our own devices. We just fight it out amongst ourselves. 

야스마니 : 항상 우리를 기계(TV 등)에 그냥 두죠. 우린 우리끼리 싸우는 거예요.

* amongst : ~중에서

Nancy: So, there’s no loving bond between the siblings. 

낸시 : 그렇다면, 형제들 사이에 사랑은 없다는 거군요.

Yasmani: Oh, we love each other, but we compete with other, too. It’s complicated. 

야스마니 : 아, 우린 서로를 사랑하지만 경쟁하기도 하죠. 좀 복잡해요.

Nancy: Then I should be glad to be an only child? 

낸시 : 그럼 전 제가 외동이라는 것에 감사해야겠네요?

Yasmani: That’s right. Count your blessings! 

야스마니 : 그렇죠. 복받았네요.
